BROADWATER KENNELS SUMMER NEWSLETTER
MAY 2009

Firstly i must apologise for this newsletter being later than expected.  We have had such a busy time with lambing, spring orphans, extra rescue animals due to the credit crunch and also our annual painting sessions in the kennels.
For those of you who aren't aware yet we are now offering a grooming service at the kennels which seems to have taken off quicker than we thought.  We are only grooming dogs as cats tend to get stressed and we always recommend that you take them to the vets so they can have some form of sedation to make the experience more stress free.  If you wish to book in for grooming please give us a ring and we will contact you for an appointment.

VACCINATIONS
Once again summer is here and i must stress that ALL animals must be accompanied with a current vaccination certificate for the duration of their stay here, Any dog coming in to stay must be covered for kennel cough but must not have had the vaccine within the 3 weeks prior to arrival at the kennels.

TOYS BEDDING FOOD AND TREATS
Please feel free to bring your pets own items with you if you wish.  We do provide toys bedding, food and treats included in the price but if you wish for your pet to have its own you are more than welcome to bring them.  We must however add that no glass food dishes are allowed due to health and safety and also we cannot accept bones as treats due to the danger of splinters in the stomach and in summer they tend to attract flies.

SECURITY
You will notice that our entrance gate to the kennels now has a lock on it.  As many of you are aware we like the dogs to have a good run during their playtime and rarely use leads unless required by the owner, therefore we have have had to lock the gate as we have had a couple of incidents where clients have just walked in and been met by 3 or 4 dogs, or on one occasion left the gate open and let one of our rescue dogs out.  If you arrive and can't see us around we will only be a matter of minutes before we see you at the gate and can safely put any dogs away that are out before you enter with your own dogs.

PUPPIES
Our own dog Ruby is currently pregnant and will be due to give birth around Mid June so anyone looking for a labrador puppy please ask for details.

RESCUE
You will probably have seen a couple of articles in the evening mail regarding our rescue animals.  We are desperately in need of finding good homes for cats and dogs (subject to homecheck) and as our rescue animals are charity based and donations of cash to animal concern are greatly appreciated as are any blankets, toys, food, treats and newspapers.  We are looking to hold a charity day to raise funds for animal concern this summer with either an its a knockout day or sponsored bungee jump and family day with dog show.  If you wish to donate money to animal concern you can send cheques made payable to animal concern millom branch.  Please take a little time to view our current rescue animals needing loving homes on our rescue page and if you are interested in getting involved with animal concern they are looking for new people to join the committee or just to volunteer with fundraising so please ring us and we will give you their contact details.

BROADWATER   KENNELS WINTER NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2008

Well who would have thought it, i went to deliver my Christmas presents in Perston yesterday and and got a call from our friend who had bought a new dog 2 weeks ago and come home to find her with 3 puppies.  Sadly she wasn,t coping very well so he rang me and together we took mum and babies to Riverbank Veterinary centre.  With a little help and a marvellous vet (Kirsty) we ended up with 7 healthy babies.  Due to the fact that this was all very unexpected, our friend wasn,t prepared for 8 dogs instead of 1 so i brought them back to the kennels as we have a specially equipped unit for housing nursing mums.  They will now stay for the Christmas period and return to our friend once they and he are recovered from the shock.  We will have regular updates on this page of their progress so keep visiting to see how they are doing.

BROADWATER   KENNELS WINTER NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER 2008

Well Christmas is nearly here and i must say that the time has flown since last Christmas.  Once again we are getting very full bookings for Christmas and New Year so if you need to book your pets in for this period please dont't leave it too late as we now have very few places left.

The Stray kennels are now completed and we have had a few occupants in them.  If you find a stray dog please remember that we only operate an out of hours service so if it is between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday please ring the local Dog Wardens to collect it.  However if you find a dog between 4pm and 9am Monday to Friday or any time at the weekend please ring us on 07791931081 to arrange for it to come here.  Sadly we can't offer a collection service as we have to be here for the animals.

We would like to thank you for your co-operation during the building work and we hope that it will soon be finished.  Now that the kennels are all built we are looking to repair and renovate all the existing buildings including putting more secure roofing on them and upgrading the electrics.  So aplologies for the car park spaces being reduced due to the slates taking up all the room, they should soon be moved (hopefully).

We would like to remind you that we now offer a full grooming service and microchipping service.  If you would like to book for any of these please ring 01229718482 for information and prices.

Sadly, due to the increase in utility bills, Animal food and cleaning products and also the continued increase in our rates we have had no alternative but to slightly increase our prices from the 1st December.  We value our clients a great deal and from the 1st January 2009 we will be introducing loyalty cards where you can recieve discounts and rewards for regular bookings with us.

**New in 2009**

I am currently looking at taking an advanced course in animal behaviour and aggression in dogs.  Once i have completed the course we will be offering help and advice on and problems you may have with your dogs, whether it be seperation anxiety, housetraining problems, guarding food-toys-bed, hopefully we can help you out.  This course will also be a great help in our rehabilitation program for rescued dogs or dogs that have come in for rehoming due to problems at home with their behaviour.

Finally we would like to thank everyone who has adopted dogs or cats from us this year.  We have now rehomed over 200 animals in the 2 years we have been here and we couldn't do this without the support of Animal Concern, RSPCA, Browne & McKinney vets and everyone who has given less fortunate animals a chance to have a loving home.  Thank you also to everyone who donated blankets and food for the rescue dogs this year all donations are gratefully received as many dogs and cats that come here for rehoming are in a poor state and need extra comfortable bedding and 6 meals a day to get them back to a good weight.

We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing you in the new year.

BROADWATER   KENNELS  SUMMER NEWSLETTER
JUNE 2008

Welcome to our newsletter page,  Well it has been a very busy month up to now.
Firstly a big congratulations to Gemma who has now completed her NVQ in animal care.  She is now going to be a full time member of staff here.  Gemma has worked very hard to gain this qualification and has put lots of effort into all her coursework as well as her excellent care with the animals.  We feel very proud to have her as a key member of our team so well done Gemma !

Our new stray kennel block is almost complete and we will be taking stray dogs in as an out of hours service when the dog wardens are not on duty.  If you find a stray dog between the hours of 9am and 4pm then the dog wardens will still collect but out of these hours and at weekends you can contact us to arrange a time when the dog can be brought here as a place of safety until we can contact the owner or the dog wardens will collect when they are next on duty.

Bootle Village Hall are having a family fun day and dog show at the village hall on Saturday the 19th of July.  All proceeds are to help with essential building work needed at the village hall.  It will be a great day for all the family so please come and participate .

On Saturday i received a call from my ex colleagues at the RSPCA to ask if i could go to Silecroft beach as a report had come in that a whale had beached and was still alive.  On my arrival i was met with the most beautiful creature i have ever seen.  He was a 15ft Pilot whale and had been found by Ann Prince who was here on holiday and stumbled across him whilst walking on the beach.  Ann, myself, my nephew Connor and his friend Ryan were ferried along the beach by the coastguards and were soon joined by the RSPCA and the British divers marine life rescue service.  It was a long day and we had planned to get him (who Ann named TOM) back into the sea at high tide.  We were then joined by Rick Brown the vet and after he liased with the marine vet it was decided that poor Tom was not in a fit enough state to be returned to the sea as he was underweight and by this time had spent too long out of the water.  Tom sadly was put to sleep to prevent suffering and it was a very emotional day for all of us but especially for Ann who had been keeping Tom wet with only a plantpot to hand for hours.  You can see more pictures of the rescue of Tom on the bdmlr website www.bdmlr.org
